Can Sulpher Based Gases in Defective Chinese Drywall Make You Sick?

Respiratory issues, other health concerns and are only a few of the problems claimed to be caused by toxic Chinese Dry Wall. Drywall is a flat board made from gypsum plaster, but Chinese Drywall can contain ash from coal burning power plants that has sulpher compounds in the mix. It is used to create interior walls for its economical cost, smooth appearance and fire-resistance. However, it seems that many homeowners are having problems in homes where defective Chinese Drywall has been installed.

Home owners have reported everything from sore throats to unexplained personality changes in their pets. Everything in between includes: respiratory problems, headaches and nosebleeds, pet ill health, nasty sulfur odors with no apparent source and a general feeling of malaise. Homeowners with young children or those who are expecting are refusing to return to the houses with Chinese Dry Wall, for fear it might damage their children's health.

The housing boom in the early-mid part of the decade  has been noted as the beginning of the defective Chinese Drywall problem. Normally,
drywall is bought from domestic producers, but the boom caused shortages, so some home builders, purchased Chinese Drywall. Now they are facing potential lawsuits
from angry homeowners who are victims of toxic Chinese Drywall. Many will lose their homes to foreclosure while waiting for repairs or a legal solution.

Despite the Department of Health's assurance that there is "no immediate health threat" from Chinese Drywall, homeowners remain unconvinced about the that there is no urgent health threat lurking in their homes. The experience of some homeowners, who felt much better when traveling away from their
residences for an extended period of time, has convinced many that the problem lies within the homes.

The Chinese drywall problem, combined with other issues relating to toxic materials found in other items produced in China is leading to a demand for tighter regulations and inspections. Also, for provisions that address the needs of homeowners faced with homelessness because they dare not re-enter their homes due to health concerns. Some home builders are addressing this by relocating families while they conduct tests, but many homeowners are fighting with their home builders who say that there is no appreciable health risk.
